My father was Gerry Cunningham (Newry Mineral). As a young lad I worked on the lorries delivering beer etc to the pubs in Newry. By the time I was ten I knew every pub in the town.
On an accuracy point “David McVeigh” as listed was in fact owned by his father “Peter McVeigh” – Peter was a wee man with a huge heart – and the pub was in High Street not Church street.
The original pub was demolished and relocated when new houses were being built in the 1980s.
Annie Dowells(?) at the bottom on Courtney Hill, now long gone, served porter in pails!!!! When Annie died her liceince was bought by Des McCreesh from Dromintee (Three Steps).
In 1969 a bar in Omeath had me removed for being underage. I was 22 and full-time employed as a professional teacher at the time! My two mates (each 18 at the time and so underage – were highly amused to be let stay to drink alcohol!)
Ever since, I’ve been trying to repeat the exercise – without success. Is it time I gave up?
I am sure the picture was taken in Casey’s pub, William Street.
(I am back from my long weekend away in Galway). My grandfather drank in Annie Dowdalls. He was a docker and so he got paid in the pub. He ordered a drink from Annie and it came to four pence halfpenny. He only had four pence on him and told Annie that he would pay her the halfpenny the next day. She told him that it was four pence halfpenny and that was that. It has to be remembered that he probably drank in the place six days of the week. So he told her fair enough and never took another drink, anywhere.Annie could not understand why my Granny kept thanking her and blessing her from that day onwards.
