Michael Boyle spent most of his working life with the Great Northern Railway, an employment that came to an end with the closing of the Goraghwood-Newry-Warrenpoint line in 1965, an event remembered with sadness by the great majority of us older people. This is his story.

‘There was some relationship, surely, between the fact that we lived in The Barracks and the reality that so many residents there in an earlier generation served in the armed forces. Practically every family had an ex-soldier. Clearly the homes were allocated according to this criterion. I fought myself at Arnhem, being one of only a handful who returned alive from it.

Armagh Road Quarry

Landfill in abandoned quarries has been the favoured method of waste disposal about here for generations. What few abandoned granite quarries that remain are too small and indeed are now being further excavated so that housing can be built there – witness the permanent ‘woodpecker’ drilling beyond Quinn Bennett’s former home on Barley Lane, for example.
