Just about everyone in the town knows Lucia Welsh so it was a great privelege and honour to be among those invited to share her birthday celebration – first at a Mass celebrated in St Clare’s Chapel by her brother Fr Oscar Welsh, and then at the home of her aunt Tara McIntyre.
Of my lifetime of attending Newry Drama Festival, two plays in particular stand out, Agnes of God and Equus. Tonight is the first return of the latter and it is performed by one of the best societies in Ireland, Silken Thomas of Kildare!
Tonight’s play at the Newry Drama Festival is the evergreen One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest‘ – this year performed by Omagh, was a highly successful film and Broadway Play and was formerly presented in Newry under the great Sean Hollywood.
This year’s Newry Drama Festival opens on Friday evening with a performance of Sheila Stephenson’s The Memory of Water.
This year for the Newry Drama Festival, instead of offering critiques on the performances, I am inviting others to do so, while I merely reflect in advance on the storyline of each play.

The Lislea Drama Festival will close on Saturday evening with Frank MacGuinness’s Carthaginians.

This Martin McDonagh play – a comedy with sinister undertones – was well performed by Kilrush, Wexford who scored highly last year with another McDonagh, The Cripple of Innisman.
